Students who complete 15 or more hours of service with our organization are eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Download the flyer below and submit it with your scholarship application.

To apply for a Catherine's Closet scholarship, students must complete the following two requirements:

  1. A minimum of 15 documented hours of service. Students must document hours on the activities sheet and get it signed by either a teacher, guidance counselor, school nurse, or Dr. Kessler.

  2. Attend at least one collection and one sorting event at 550 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Kessler's signature must be on your activities sheet for the sorting and distribution sessions.

In addition to the above requirements, the following activities may be used towards the required volunteer hours:
  • Organize a gown donation drive. Bring gowns to 550 Broad Street Newark on sorting day. All gown donations are welcome, but Catherine's Closet is in desperate need of plus-size gowns, size 16-26.

  • Advertise the donation drive and distributions by passing out flyers, posting on social media, etc. Hours for passing out flyers will be assigned points to determine credit toward scholarship.

  • Help craft a social media strategy to advertise gown collections, sorting and distribution events. See sample press release and revise to specify your school or organization

  • Contact local newspapers, television and radio stations to secure coverage of gown collections, sorting and distribution events.

  • Notify local organizations such as religious organizations, businesses, and schools to ask them to host gown donation drives, volunteer and advertise distributions

  • Brainstorm ideas to help grow the number of volunteers for collection and distribution days.

    Please Note:

  • Transportation to and from an activity is not counted as credited service hours.

  • To be considered for a scholarship, activities must include a variety of activities.

Catherine’s Closet is one of the most unique, magnificent, and helpful organizations out there. To be a volunteer for Catherine’s Closet is so much more than just documenting hours on paper or earning money for college. Catherine, the young lady who the organization is named after, was tragically taken away from this world. She had a dream to help everyone she could, and to make her community a peaceful, unified, harmonious place. Anyone involved with the program should honor this wish of hers and truly model their work with the organization after Catherine’s lifestyle.

When considering working with Catherine’s Closet, you should understand as a volunteer that you are collecting dresses, hanging up flyers, spreading the word around your town, and helping on the distribution days to touch lives. Yes, you can receive money for your hard work, but that is not what the message of the program is.

WE are here to show women how to be strong, independent and loving at the same time that we are helping them. Please, please, PLEASE know that you can make so many beautiful, happy, and divine memories as you continue on your journey with Catherine’s Closet. Don’t take the opportunity for granted. This organization is NOT JUST about earning scholarship money; it’s about making you a better person. That is the definition of community service, and Catherine’s Closet is here to do just that: serve the community.

Thank you for taking part in our mission.
